The Sidney Prize and Other Prizes

The sidney prize honors an outstanding piece of journalism that exposes social and economic injustice. Nominations are accepted each month according to the date the work first appeared, whether in an online publication or in print. The winner is announced on the second Wednesday of each month and receives a $500 honorarium and a certificate designed by New Yorker cartoonist Edward Sorel. The Hertz Foundation established the award in 2016 in memory of Raymond Sidney, a longtime volunteer who embodied the concept of building the Hertz community by generously sharing his time and expertise as a mentor and by opening his home to fellows for rest and relaxation.
