Three Hong Kong Prizes This Year
Hong Kong prize are awards given to people for their contributions in various fields. These prizes may be for a single contribution, for a body of related research or for their lifetime achievement. They are awarded by universities and organizations. Usually, the awardee will receive a sum of money and a certificate or a trophy.
The HK Science and Technology Innovation Prize is an annual scientific award for young scientists to honour their excellent research achievements in areas of scientific interest in Hong Kong, such as Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, Life and Health, New Materials and New Energy, Advanced Manufacturing and FinTech. The aim of the award is to promote a culture of scientific pursuit and encourage young people to develop interests in science and technology.
Last week’s HK Prize draw went without a first prize winner, allowing the jackpot to increase to more than HK$102 million. This week’s draw will see the Triple Trio, Quartet and First 4 merged into a single pool of HK$20.8 million for the HK Prize, with a top prize of HK$3 million available to the lucky winner. The prize amount will also be topped up from the jackpot reserve.
The 2024 Hari Art Prize is open to all self-taught artists and recent art graduates within the first ten years of their artistic career who exhibit strong creative potential and an ability to create innovative artworks using any medium or genre. The winning artist will be granted a cash prize of HK$100,000, donated by Aron Harilela, CEO and Chairman of the renowned luxury hotel group, Harilela Hotels. This year’s Hong Kong Prize ceremony was held on Tuesday night (December 19) at the University of Hong Kong. The Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, The Hon John KC Lee, delivered opening remarks remotely. The ceremony was followed by a panel discussion and the presentation of the medals and certificates.
A total of 10 students received awards in the main categories of the HLMA this year. The Gold Award was won by Kyan Cheung Ka-Hin and Ethan Soo Jon-Yi from Harrow International School Hong Kong for their research report titled “On the Properties of the Semigroup Generated by the RL Fractional Integral”. Merit awards were also conferred on students from La Salle College, Tak Oi Secondary School and Carmel Pak U Secondary School.
Prof Leo Poon, who was presented with the Hong Kong Prize, is a Professor in the School of Public Health at Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, University of Hong Kong and co-director of the Pasteur Research Pole, member of the Pasteur Network. He is a virologist, specializing in emerging viruses, and he has embodied Louis Pasteur’s vision of science without borders. He has made significant contributions to the preparedness of Hong Kong against the pandemic of coronaviruses.
