For a nation that’s surrounded by water, Australians are hugely proud of their pools. These iconic aquatic venues play a big part in the country’s heritage, daily way of life and sporting culture – and they have given many young Australians so much joy and memorable moments in their lives.
Luckily, Sydney is home to some of the world’s best pools – and there are plenty of them within easy reach of the city centre. From the famed Bondi Icebergs to historic Coogee Baths, here are five of our favourite Sydney-based swimming holes.
A beautiful tidal pool set into the cliffs of Manly’s picturesque northern beach, this historic spot is a great place to enjoy a swim or just relax on a deckchair, with sweeping views over the bay and the famous Fairy Bower surf break. The pool is protected from the sand and waves by a wall of rock, and there are showers and changing rooms on site. The pool was opened in 1907 by champion swimmer Henry Alexander Wylie, and is now one of the city’s most beautiful tidal pools.
The famous Bondi Icebergs might be the most recognizable of all the Sydney-based pools – and for good reason. This stunning location ranked as number seven on a recent list of the world’s top natural swimming pools, and it’s not hard to see why. Filled with seawater and surrounded by lush green gardens, this is the perfect place to take a dip at sunrise, or to soak up the atmosphere on a sunny afternoon.
There are plenty of cafes nearby for those who want a post-swim coffee, and the change rooms are well equipped with hot showers (included in pool entry). The pool is a little rough for people used to the neatly lined lanes of an indoor 50m pool, but this only adds to its charm and fun.
For those looking to escape the crowds, there are a few spots around the perimeter of the pool where you can find some peace and quiet. There’s also a sauna included in the entry price and a gym that needs a separate membership. Parking is available in Notts Avenue and on the street between Bondi and Tamarama, but only for 2 hours.
If you’re swimming on a budget, the nearby Icebergs is a cheaper alternative. There are still lots of showers and changing rooms, but it’s not as big or as fancy as the main pool, and you can only get in at certain times during the day.
The latest scent from Arquiste, this is a gorgeous woody amber that evokes the scent of the nape of your lover’s neck. The dry down is softer than the parfum concentration, more like an eau de parfum, and it has excellent projection and longevity on the skin. There’s a body cream under development which will pair perfectly with this perfume.
