US lawmakers including Republican senator Marco Rubio have nominated activists from Hong Kong’s umbrella protest movement for the Nobel peace prize, saying their non-violent struggle to push for democracy embodied “the peaceful aspirations of the people of the former British colony”. The bipartisan group said they wanted to honor activists like Joshua Wong, who led 79 days of street occupations last year in a bid to wrestle democratic concessions from Beijing’s authoritarian rule. They also nominated Nathan Law, Alex Chow and Gwyneth Ho for their role in the demonstrations. The five were among those convicted under the new National Security law for subversion after the protests ended. The activists’ lawyers say they will appeal the verdicts and are confident that their case will be upheld.
