Data SGP is an analytical tool that provides a more accurate picture of student performance by assessing how well students have grown relative to their academic peers. This information can be used to inform educational decisions, to plan programs and support student needs, and to track a student’s progress.

Despite being known as ‘big data’, the data used in SGP analyses is relatively small in comparison to datasets utilized in other big-data projects (such as the analysis of global Facebook interactions). Nevertheless, the amount of data that must be managed and analyzed can still be challenging for novices to manage. Therefore, it is important to understand the concepts behind SGP and its mathematical models and assumptions before using it in your own data set.

A typical SGP report includes a student’s current SGP, which is determined by the most recent assessment within the past 18 months, and their normative SGP, which is calculated from their best performance across all assessments taken during their school career. A student’s growth percentile is also provided, which shows how far a student has surpassed or fallen below their academic peers for the given year.

The SGP methodology is based on the assumption that students are improving over time. However, there are some limitations to this assumption. A student’s SGP may decline in a given year for several reasons, such as illness or absences. Therefore, the SGP in a particular year should be interpreted with caution.

When interpreting SGPs, it is essential to understand the meaning of student growth percentiles. A growth percentile indicates how much a student has improved in their academic skills, but it does not indicate the level of improvement a student has achieved. For example, a student with a high score on a state assessment can show low growth, and two students with very different scale scores can have the same growth percentage.

SGPs can be compared between schools and between years, but differences in SGP should be interpreted with caution. For example, a student who improves their SGP in 2023 by 15 points should not be compared with a student who improves their SGP by 10 points in the same year, as these changes will have little impact on their future outcomes.

The SGP methodology is used for a wide range of applications in Singapore. For example, the Land Transport Authority collects real-time traffic data from sensors and cameras to optimize road infrastructure, reduce congestion, and enhance public transportation efficiency. These insights are analyzed by Data SGP to help planners make informed decisions, such as how to best accommodate commuter flow or design walkways and cycling paths to encourage sustainable modes of travel. Moreover, emerging technologies such as 5G and quantum computing are expected to enhance the capabilities of Data SGP, allowing planners to simulate urban scenarios and test how they will affect various factors like traffic or weather conditions. This will enable them to better design cities that are sustainable and resilient.
