Awards and Prizes for the Creative Arts and Research

A total of five Hongkongers have been nominated for the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize this year. Jimmy Lai, Chow Hang-tung, Lee Cheuk-yan, Gwyneth Ho and Joshua Wong were nominated for their fervent dedication to protecting freedoms in the city and campaigning for democracy.
In the film categories, Hong Kong swept the awards at the 2020 HKIFF with Donnie Yen’s action thriller Raging Fire winning a series of prizes including best music and editing. In addition, the documentary category saw the first Hong Kong winner ever at the prestigious Palme d’Or festival with Oksana Karpovych’s gripping Intercepted, which contrasts scenes of life in Ukraine since the Russian invasion with phone conversations between Ukrainian soldiers and their families.
The Justice Centre Hong Kong began the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Art Prize in 2022, and this year it was co-hosted with EU Office in Hong Kong and Macao and Goethe-Institut Hong Kong. The theme is Our Changing World, and submissions were encouraged from artists in all disciplines to explore the many aspects of global evolution. The grand prize was awarded to Pakistani artist Sameen Agha for her sculpture A Home is a Terrible Place to Love, which is made out of red marble and shows a house dismantling like a cardboard box.
BOCHK Science and Technology Innovation Prize 2023
The annual prize is aimed at recognizing scientific research excellence in the areas of Hong Kong’s strengths, including artificial intelligence and robotics, health and life sciences, new materials and energy, advanced manufacturing and fintech. The award seeks to recognize outstanding work by individuals or teams from different sectors of society, and is open to both local and overseas researchers working in these areas.
The prize is valued at HK$2,000,000 and includes a certificate, an engraved medallion and a trophy. The winning research article will be published in a leading academic journal, and the authors will have the opportunity to present their work at a prestigious international conference. The prize is sponsored by BOC Bank (Hong Kong) Limited and Hong Kong University.
