The Sidney Prize is awarded to a scholar who has attained national distinction in scholarship, undergraduate teaching, and leadership in the cause of liberal arts education. It is named in honor of the distinguished American philosopher and Phi Beta Kappa member Sidney Hook. This award is given at the Society’s Triennial Council Meeting and announced in the Key Reporter and in the General Newsletter. Nominations are due a year and a half before each Triennial Council. A call for nominations will appear in the Key Reporter and General Newsletter, as well as on social media.
Sidney is also remembered by his students, who have honored him by creating numerous scholarships and professorships in his name at Hamilton College. His devoted students have recounted stories of his generosity and wisdom, such as the time he secretly recorded his own lectures in history class at Hamilton to share with later generations. These bootleg recordings are now available to anyone who wants to hear him talk about the nitty-gritty details of history and politics.
In order to perpetuate in some small way the generative influence which Professor Cox exercised over thousands of Dartmouth students both inside and outside his classes, a group of his friends has solicited funds with a view to establishing an annual prize for that piece of undergraduate writing which best meets the standards of originality and integrity set by him. Each year the committee chooses the most outstanding work submitted for consideration.
As the winner of the Sydney Prize, Nazanin will receive a cash prize along with a trophy designed by celebrated Australian artist, Judy Watson, and will have an opportunity to speak about her story of courage in front of local audiences, including a public lecture at the City Hall and a gala dinner hosted by Lord Mayor Clover Moore. In addition, the City of Sydney is committed to supporting Nazanin’s ongoing efforts to turn outrage into action in support of women and human rights in Iran.
The Hillman Foundation introduced its Hillman Prize program in 1950. It recognizes journalists, writers, and public figures who pursue social justice and public policy for the common good. The winners of the Hillman Prize are chosen each month based on merit. Nominations are welcome from any source – American magazines, newspapers, website/blogs, television and radio news broadcasts or published photography series.
